Jamaica cuisine is as varied as the population of the island nation itself, there have been may influences that have guided the hands of the Jamaican cooks over the past couple of centuries, notably the Spanish, English and African and this is reflected in the diversity of the food and the ingredients used.
My personal favourite has to be the Jerk Chicken or Jerk Pork, I like my food as spicy as I can get it and the inclusion of Scotch Bonnet chilli peppers turns a spicy dish into a blazing inferno, almost painful to eat but so tasty you just have to have more, even if you tongue has gone completely dead. Other people prefare a less spicy dish, maybe like the Jamaican national dish of Salt Fish and Ackee. For those of you who don’t know, Ackee is the national fruit of Jamaica and very popular it is as well.
There are so many dishes to pick from, so much variety that it would be impossible to list them on this Blog, so, I found an excellent website that has some great dishes listed, including the Ackee and Saltfish, the article is called “Ten best foods to eat in Jamaica” and it is a very worthwhile read.
Some of my personal favourites have not been included, maybe it is because not everyone has an asbestos tongue. While on your Jamaica vacation, you are bound to eat out at one place or another, if you think your being bunged the tourist platters and want something authentic, just ask the staff at Villas Sur Mer what they like to eat and where, you are bound to get the real deal.
